REMEMBERING SHARPEVILLE: SIXTY YEARS ON

On March 21 1960, 69 peaceful protesters were brutally murdered by the apartheid police in Sharpeville. A peaceful protest against the Pass Laws ended in brutality.
Police opened fire on the un-threatening crowd – most of those killed were shot in the back.
This ushered in a new era of repression and resistance and changed the course of South African history.
March 21st is celebrated every year as Human Rights Day in South Africa.
